Least Bittern in flight

Male Least Bittern in flight in golden evening light in breeding colors (sandra calderbank)I’ve been chasing these beautiful little shy birds with amazing frustration trying to catch just ONE in flight.  I’ve decided that they are playing games with me ;- ) and they wait until I’m tired and THEN they fly.   Last month I traveled to the Viera Wetlands in Florida and managed to finally nab one in flight.  I found that it worked best with a hand held IS 70-200 with a 2X extender instead of a longer lens on a gimbal head which is my usual  approach to capturing birds in flight. These shy small herons are so quick that I couldn’t manage to get them sharp in the long lens. Any input or advice is appreciated.  Please share what technique works best for you.
