White-crowned Sparrows

White-crowned Sparrows are frequent and widespread, but I have never observed one until I went on a birding trip to South Texas. These sparrows hop along the ground and scrape like towhees for seeds, insects, and grains. The White-crowned sparrow does the “double hop” along the ground as they advance forward and then rapidly hop backwards and again forward to pounce on whatever food they have exposed by scratching the dirt.
